Pakistan Scrapped Its Free Visa and Never Built a Nomad Visa. Why Lahore Still Deserves a Hard Look

Pakistan Scrapped Its Free Visa and Never Built a Nomad Visa. Why Lahore Still Deserves a Hard Look

The red tape got harder, but Lahore's pull on remote workers hasn't faded one bit.

Share:

A walled Mughal city, a 165 dollar one bedroom, and a three month visa clock that decides everything.

Picture a remote designer paying 4,433 dollars a month for a one bedroom in central New York (Numbeo, October 2026). The same size flat in central Lahore averages PKR 45,785, about 165 dollars at 276.89 rupees per dollar (xe.com, October 21, 2026).

Numbeo puts a single person's monthly costs, excluding rent, at about 380 dollars in Lahore against 1,663 in New York. That designer is a composite example, not a real person, but the arithmetic is real: roughly 545 dollars a month in Lahore against 6,095 in New York, about 11 times less.

Same income, different costs, that is Living Borderlessly.

Those are local prices, and Nomads.com puts a nomad style month in Lahore closer to 1,625 dollars, so confirm numbers directly. Get real advice on anything legally ambiguous, especially visas, because this is the part Pakistan makes hard. There is no digital nomad or income based residence visa.

The free visa prior to arrival for 126 countries ended on January 1, 2026, and US, Canadian, and UK citizens now pay 60 dollars for a single entry tourist e-visa valid for three months (Wego, Expatsi). The US State Department rates Pakistan Level 3, reconsider travel, as of June 16, 2026.

Lahore itself rewards the people who go: Gulberg and DHA for coworking and cafes, the Walled City and Badshahi Mosque for history, and Food Street for dinner. Air quality is the other honest cost, with the city ranking third most polluted among major cities in a September 2026 report.

Our full City Deep Dive guide has the cost tables, neighborhood notes, honest friction points, and the Geo-Metric and Efficiency Scores.

So here is the question. Would a three month visa window and a Level 3 advisory stop you, or would 165 dollar rent make you apply anyway?

Tell us in the comments, especially if you have lived in Lahore and your experience differs.

💡 Answer to Trivia

C. A person present in Pakistan for 183 days or more in a tax year is resident, and the tax year runs from July 1 to June 30 (PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, reviewed August 24, 2026).

Happy travels, explorers!!
