Quick trivia before we get into it. Kathmandu sits in a valley ringed by mountains, at an elevation that surprises most first-time visitors. Roughly how high above sea level is the city?

A) 600 feet
B) 2,500 feet
C) 4,600 feet
D) 8,000 feet

Answer in the full article.

Hello borderless souls,

We are staying in South Asia and heading into the mountains. Kathmandu has some of the lowest rents we have covered anywhere, a growing cafe and coworking scene, and a headline that has been circulating for a while, a Nepali digital nomad visa.

Here is the part we want you to hear from us first. Nepal has talked about a digital nomad visa, but as of this writing the Department of Immigration has not published one, so there is no application route. That changes how you plan a stay, and we walk through what remote workers are doing in the meantime.

Full breakdown below, complete visual guide with our Geo-Metric and Efficiency Scores lands on the site shortly after.

Stay curious, stay borderless, and keep one eye on the immigration site.

Nepal's digital nomad visa is still pending, but Kathmandu already works as a budget seasonal base

Nepal's digital nomad visa remains a proposal. As of late 2026, the Department of Immigration has not officially published one, and reported details shift depending on the source.

Remote workers enter on a tourist visa, costing around 125 USD for 90 days, with a maximum stay of 150 days per calendar year. A new online e-Visa launched recently at the same rates, making the process easier.

That positions Kathmandu as an excellent seasonal base, even if it isn't yet a year-round address. The cost case is striking: one expat swapped roughly 2,300 Australian dollars a month for inner-city Melbourne for around 320 USD a month in Jhamsikhel, Kathmandu's most popular expat enclave.

Jhamsikhel and Sanepa attract most remote workers; Patan offers historic architecture and a growing café scene; Lazimpat suits those wanting green surroundings near medical facilities.

Plan around winter air quality; it is the one variable that shapes the calendar more than anything else.
