They said El Salvador was too dangerous. Then the murder rate dropped below Canada's.

Trivia Questionâť“

Guatemala sits at 1,500 meters' elevation in Antigua, giving it a permanent spring climate with no air conditioning required year-round. Do you know which specific 2025 regulation allows foreign remote workers to legally establish residency in Guatemala and protect their foreign-sourced income from local taxation entirely?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Hello borderless souls,

I will be honest with you. El Salvador was not on my list.

For years it carried a reputation that made it easy to skip over. You have heard the headlines. You may have skipped it too.

But something happened. The transformation that started around 2022 has turned into one of the more surprising stories in the hemisphere. The homicide rate, which was once the highest in the world at 103 per 100,000, closed 2025 at 1.3 per 100,000. That is lower than Atlanta. Lower than Chicago. Statistically lower than many cities where your clients are headquartered.

And then in April 2025, El Salvador launched a digital nomad visa.

This week I dug into all of it. Here is what I found.

El Salvador is quickly establishing itself as a top choice for digital nomads, helped by its new Digital Nomad Visa launched in April 2025.

This visa allows remote workers to stay for up to four years, provided they earn at least $1,460 a month and can prove their remote employment or freelance status.

The application process is straightforward, available both online and at Salvadoran consulates, with processing averaging 45 days. The visa starts with a one-year term, renewable annually for a total of four years.

Life in San Salvador is budget-friendly: city-center apartments average $495 per month, affordable meals cost around $3, and public transport is just $27 monthly.

With the U.S. dollar as official currency and no local tax on foreign income, finances are simple and favorable for expats.

While the visa program is new and may involve some delays, El Salvador's mix of affordable living and supportive regulations continues to attract adventurous remote workers.
