Antigua and Lake Atitlan: Two Lives Under $1,800 a Month on US Central Time

Trivia Questionâť“

Guatemala sits at 1,500 meters' elevation in Antigua, giving it a permanent spring climate with no air conditioning required year-round. Do you know which specific 2025 regulation allows foreign remote workers to legally establish residency in Guatemala and protect their foreign-sourced income from local taxation entirely?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

To my fellow curators of freedom,

Guatemala just became the most underpriced legal remote-work base in Central America, and almost no one has noticed yet.

A brand-new nomad visa. A territorial tax system. Colonial Fiber coworking at $1,500 a month. And a lake Aldous Huxley once called the most beautiful in the world for under $800.

The full story is below.

Guatemala introduced the Residencia Temporal para NĂłmadas Digitales in October 2025, a streamlined residence permit designed for remote professionals.

This permit allows foreigners to legally live in Guatemala while working for companies abroad, with simplified requirements such as the removal of a local guarantor and a shortened criminal background check period of just two years.

The permit is valid for one year, renewable towards permanent residency, and dependents receive work authorization.

The application fee stands at about $225 USD, with no minimum income restriction.

Guatemala's territorial tax system exempts foreign-earned income from local taxes, making the country financially appealing for digital nomads.

Destinations like Antigua Guatemala offer robust coworking spaces and lively community hubs, while lakeside towns such as San Pedro La Laguna provide affordable, scenic living.

Guatemala’s flexible visa, tax advantages, and cultural vibrance are drawing remote workers from around the world.
