Mumbai's remote worker math is striking. One Western expat swapped a Berlin one-bedroom costing €1,450 a month for a comparable flat in Bandra Mumbai's most cosmopolitan neighborhood, a short walk from the sea at roughly 600 US dollars. His food budget fell by more than half. Same income, dramatically different life.

The catch is real and worth stating plainly. As of 2026, India has no dedicated digital nomad visa. Most foreign remote workers enter on an e-tourist visa, which does not legally authorize remote work, even for a fully foreign employer. It is a widely tolerated gray zone but a gray zone nonetheless.
