A) 1 month

B) 3 months

C) 6 months

D) 12 months

Answer in the full article.

Hello borderless souls,

Tokyo sits near the top of every dream destination list, and for years remote workers were told they could only visit for 90 days and hope for the best.

Then Japan quietly launched its own nomad visa, with a price of admission that makes most other programs look generous.

We checked the real rents in Shibuya, Meguro, Setagaya and the wards most guides skip, what a coworking desk costs, and why the hardest part of living here is not the money.

Your six months start the moment you land, so read this before you book.

Tokyo costs a fraction of New York or London — if you qualify for the visa

Tokyo is pulling remote workers away from New York and London rents — and the math is striking. A one-bedroom in Brooklyn can cost over three thousand dollars a month; the same setup near Tokyo's Nakameguro canal runs roughly a thousand to fifteen hundred.

Neighborhood choice moves the needle considerably. Shibuya is the priciest nomad hub, while Setagaya — home to the beloved Shimokitazawa — offers furnished studios closer to six or seven hundred. A realistic solo budget lands between roughly twelve hundred and twenty-eight hundred dollars a month, all in.

The visa is where Japan gets precise. The Digital Nomad Visa, launched in early 2024, grants exactly six months, cannot be renewed from inside Japan, and requires annual income of at least ten million yen — around sixty-four thousand US dollars — earned entirely from outside the country.

Think of it as a high-income test drive, not a residency path. For a longer stay, the Highly Skilled Professional visa is the more serious route. Confirm all requirements with the Immigration Services Agency of Japan before booking anything.
